What does it mean to be "baptized?"
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:38 is a key to understanding what one should do to achieve one's salvation.
Understanding the key words in this Scripture are so large toward understanding God’s awesome plan.
It should be important to us to attempt to fully comprehend each of these terms used by the Holy Ghost in Acts 2:38 which are often glossed over by many.
If we truly attempt to learn about what each of these Words mean, not just the language, but the importance of the concept as it is applied and taught through the living Word of God, then we too, may have a better grasp of doing what is required for God to receive the Salvation of Almighty YHWH.
When the question "what shall we do" was asked to Peter, Peter responded and commanded them to “repent and be baptized."
Therefore to be baptized will be the focus of this article which looks at the content of this one Scripture uttered by Peter, the rock the church was founded upon, the man whom Christ left with the keys to the Kingdom.
Acts 2:36-40 (KJV)
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
[37] Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? [38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [39] For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. [40] And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
The first use of the word baptized in the King James Bible is Matthew 3:6
Matthew 3:6 (KJV)
And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
baptizo, Greek 907, Strong’s
baptizo, bap-tid'-zo; from a derivative of Greek 911 (bapto); to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N.T.) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technical) of the ordinance of Christian baptism :- baptist, baptize, wash.
The meaning of Greek baptizo means to make whelmed (i.e fully wet) as used in the washing process or absolution.
Matthew 3:6 speaks about John the Baptist who was baptizing in the Jordan.
Briefly take a look at who John the Baptist was.
Luke 1:11-17 (KJV)
And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. [12] And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. [13] But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. [14] And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. [15] For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. [16] And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. [17] And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Luke 3:1-18 (KJV)
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, [2] Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. [3] And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; [4] As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. [5] Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; [6] And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. [7] Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? [8] Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. [9] And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. [10] And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? [11] He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. [12] Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? [13] And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. [14] And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. [15] And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; [16] John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: [17] Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. [18] And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
Matthew 11:7-15 (KJV)
And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? [8] But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. [9] But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. [10] For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. [11] Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. [12] And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. [13] For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. [14] And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. [15] He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Note all the references to baptism just with John the Baptist.
John was ordained a preacher to be a messenger by God Almighty and he went about preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
John preached to the people of Israel to repent and be baptized for their deliverance, for forgiveness of their sins before Almighty God.
baptisma, Greek 908, Strong’s
baptisma, bap'-tis-mah; from Greek 907 (baptizo); baptism (technical or figurative) :- baptism.
This call to baptize was a call from God in the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.
Luke 3:2-4 (KJV)
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. [3] And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; [4] As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
John had a commission to go before the Christ and prepare the people for the Lord.
in the Spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
This statement made by the angel (in Luke 1:17) is also a prophetic reference to the prophecy of the Prophet Malachi.
Malachi 4:4-6 (KJV)
Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
[5] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: [6] And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
Why was baptism— the washing with water— a commission from God?
The Old Testament Hebrew text shows water was used to cleanse, or wash, to make one clean before appearing or ministering before God.
Exodus 19:10-11 (KJV)
And YHWH said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, [11] And be ready against the third day: for the third day YHWH will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
Exodus 29:4 (KJV)
And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water.
Exodus 30:18-21 (KJV)
Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. [19] For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: [20] When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto YHWH: [21] So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.
Exodus 40:12 (KJV)
And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.
Leviticus 11:40 (KJV)
And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
Leviticus 14:8-9 (KJV)
And he that is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself in water, that he may be clean: and after that he shall come into the camp, and shall tarry abroad out of his tent seven days. [9] But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he shall shave off: and he shall wash his clothes, also he shall wash his flesh in water, and he shall be clean.
All these Scriptures show that "water," was used for ceremonial washing as well general hygiene and to be kept clean from that which was unclean.
In the New testament, God is seeking to make clean those under sin, so therefore it makes sense that water, or a process using water, would be instituted for a Holy cleansing process based after the Old Testament law, which was both physical and Spiritual.
The next Scripture concerns the word "baptized" is Matthew 3:13-14.
Matthew 3:13-14 (KJV)
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. [14] But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Here, Jesus has come to John to be baptized of him.
John was sent forth first to prepare the way before the Lord, because as we learn next Jesus, the Lamb of God, will come and Baptize with Fire and the Holy Ghost.
John 1:29 (KJV)
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Let's look at this Scripture in more detail.
Matthew 3:1-4:1 (KJV)
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, [2] And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. [3] For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. [4] And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. [5] Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, [6] And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
[7] But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? [8] Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: [9] And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. [10] And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. [11] I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: [12] Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
[13] Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. [14] But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? [15] And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. [16] And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
[4:1] Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
We have here a direct answer for this act of baptism? : And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.
Though Jesus is the Lamb of God, he says to John Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.
We each must do what is necessary to obtain or to fufil all righteousness.
Note what happened next.
Matthew 3:16-17 (KJV)
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
The definition of baptism is to make fully whelmed, fully wet, meaning Jesus went into the water as John baptized Him.
Jesus was fully covered by the water. The Scriptures prove His water baptism occurred in this fashion when Jesus was baptized, and He went up straightway out of the water.
He immediately came up, out of the water of the Jordan river and then, the Holy Spirit fell upon Jesus, immediately following this baptism.
Next "the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him."
We then are told by the Scripture that a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
God is "well pleased" with His obedient Son in being cleansed and washed in the holy ordinance of baptism and having "suffered" to humble himself to obey this commandment by God, His Father in Heaven.
the next scripture refering to baptism is Matthew 20:22-23
Matthew 20:22-23 (KJV)
But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. [23] And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
Here, Jesus is speaking of HIS baptism, not that which was of water, but this one is to come of blood—His blood.
Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
The "cup" and the "baptism" Christ refers to is His own death.
In this Scripture two of the disciples are asking to sit next to Jesus, to be on His right and left hand in Heaven.
Jesus then asks this question referring to His baptism, His death, His blood sacrifice.
Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
Both brothers answer surely they are ready; and true to their word Jesus replies: "Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with."
Both these very sons of Zebedee will eventually be martyred for the Gospel of Christ, each in bloody executions.
Matthew 20:20-23 (KJV)
Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. [21] And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. [22] But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask.
So Jesus here is speaking of His death sacrifice—His cup and His Baptism.
Christ has a Baptism which is The Baptism, fully whelmed in HIS own death, the very blood of the Lamb of God sent to take away the sins of the world.
The Scriptures give another witness to this. Christ came not by water only, but by water and blood.
1st John 5:5-13 (KJV)
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? [6] This is He that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. [7] For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. [8] And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. [9] If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. [10] He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. [11] And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. [13] These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Note what the apostle John is saying. Jesus came not baptized by man's baptism, but God's, Christ's own blood baptism.
John teaches that there are three witnesses in heaven which testify or bear witness; these three: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost are all one Spirit.
John further teaches that in the earth there are three that bear witness: the Spirit, and the water, and the blood— these are one in Christ, JESUS, the Lamb, the blood of the Lamb.
Just as baptism is not just mere water, but it is the blood of Christ which also involves the Spirit because it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
In the next use of baptized, note something often overlooked and often not taught much in many church congregations today.
Mark 1:5 (KJV)
And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
This Scripture is referring to John the Baptist, but note what it says: there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
There are churches today who simply reject baptism as being for salvation.
They are in essence the same as those who stood by and heard John's message, but did not willingly "come out unto John."
Note that John preached to the people, convicting them of their sins against God, but those who heard and responded willfully "come out unto John" and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
There are many congregations who deny any need for the believer to be baptized. These deny the need for baptism as salvational.
Most non-baptismal preachers will be linked to theologies which are similar to those who sponsor the praying "the sinner's prayer" whereby the person accepts he or she is is sinner in this short prayer to God and the church preacher informs them "you're saved."
This negative attitude toward the act of baptism is contradictory to both John and Jesus. For as Jesus stated we must first become humble as children before God else wise we will in no wise enter.
Mark 10:15 (KJV)
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
Those churches could be guilty of this simply because they failed to see what John the Baptist was trying to say in Scriptures like this one.
Mark 1:8-9 (KJV)
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. [9] And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
John's baptism was of repentance in water only. John washed those preparing to meet the coming savior the Messiah of Israel. But it was THE BAPTISM of Jesus [the Spirit] that is the important One.
Christ's baptism was completed on the cross for all sin, atoned for the world.
It still required one to have faith in Jesus to commit to humble himself or herself to approach the throne of God's grace willfully with a heart of sincere repentance and enter into His Baptism— the blood of the Lamb— the physical baptism and Spiritual baptism received in the Holy Commandment of water baptism.
Mark 10:38-39 (KJV)
But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? [39] And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
Here's a Scripture often ignored by those who deny the "salvational" requirement of baptism.
Jesus actually spoke a few times about being "saved," this is one of them.
Mark 16:16 (KJV)
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Many often take this scripture and pit it against other scriptures (rather than properly harmonizing the scriptures) to say that Jesus did not make baptism a requirement, only believing.
But If you were to use this same logic in another way, will it work?
This is as if you said, "I'm going to go take the kids to the pool to go swimming; and say hello to Steve the Life guard."
"We did not go to the pool today."
( Hence nor did the kids go swimming nor did you say "Hi" to Steve.)
He that believeth willfully also went to the pool, thus he went swimming (and is baptized) and saluted his friend Steve the Life Guard (shall be saved).
Thus the one not choosing to go to the pool, In true Faith (he that believeth not) shall be damned.
This next Scripture concerns the baptism of John the Baptist.
Luke 3:2-22 (KJV)
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. [3] And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; [4] As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. [19] But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, [20] Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. [21] Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, [22] And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
This is an interesting scripture describing a question posed to those whom willfully came to John the Baptist.
Luke 3:7 (KJV)
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
"Who hath warned you...?"
Here is a question asked to the people of Israel who came to be baptized.
Luke 3:12-14 (KJV)
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? [13] And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. [14] And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
You see, John was baptizing but his (baptism) was not unto salvation, but of repentance to prepare for the coming Messiah who has the Baptism for Salvation.
Much like Christians today who want to know "how can I be saved?" these men and women were asking the same question, but note they were eagerly seeking this already being prepared to be baptized.
John teaches them to live in a righteous way after being baptized and having repented showing forth true fruits of repentance.
Anyone can can confess their sins or repent, but those who turn away from doing sin are truly repentant.
This next scripture is quite interesting.
Luke 7:29-30 (KJV)
And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. [30] But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
Jesus, in this scripture, is referring to John the Baptist; and the book of Luke notes something most interesting regarding "the counsel of God."
Luke 7:24-30 (KJV)
And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? [25] But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. [26] But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. [27] This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. [28] For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. [29] And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. [30] But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
Note that those baptized by John, believed, heard, received HIS words, but those who did not become baptized (nor repented nor sought to turn for their ways) "rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him."
Those who do not submit to God and his commandments will only judge themselves by having rejected the counsel of Almighty God in that they refused to obey what Christ set as "an example."
That "example" by Jesus, is found in John 13.
John 13:1-17 (KJV)
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. [2] And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; [3] Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; [4] He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. [5] After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. [6] Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? [7] Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. [8] Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. [9] Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. [10] Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. [11] For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. [12] So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? [13] Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. [14] If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. [15] For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. [16] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. [17] If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
This scripture describes Jesus using water in a bason and washing the disciple's feet— a common practice dating to Abraham.
But this is clearly a powerful type and a shadow of baptism as Jesus states "if I wash thee not THOU HAST NO PART WITH ME."
Washing is required. Note that His disciples submit and obey and are cleaned by Jesus.
Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
Not all were clean in His presence, for one was of the devil, one was also not of faith, not into belief, that of Judas.
Those who do wash— the one who believeth and is baptized —"is clean every whit."
Note what Jesus states, "For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you."
His desciples should "do" the same "example" as Jesus has done unto to them.
Then Jesus further states "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
In this next Scripture Jesus speaks about his baptism.
Luke 12:50 (KJV)
But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
Note that Jesus is saying how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
The Word "straightened" means to be afflicted.
sunecho, Greek 4912, Strong’s
sunecho, soon-ekh'-o; from Greek 4862 (sun) and Greek 2192 (echo); to hold together, i.e. to compress (the ears, with a crowd or siege) or arrest (a prisoner); figurative to compel, perplex, afflict, preoccupy :- constrain, hold, keep in, press, lie sick of, stop, be in a strait, straiten, be taken with, throng.
Again, this Scripture is referring to Christ's Baptism, which must be "accomplished," for the blood of the lamb to be able to atone for sins of the world.
In this next verse we see Jesus and His disciples, who baptized others.
John 3:22-23 (KJV)
After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
[23] And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
Jesus was now baptizing others with His disciples. The Pharisees are tying to figure out why Jesus is baptizing and has taken away, as it would appear, John's former audience.
John then explains about the Christ, who is Jesus, the one whom was preferred before him, by God.
In this Scripture John also perfectly illustrates about faith in speaking to the Pharisees who lacked faith and received not Christ's testimony.
John 3:22-36 (KJV)
After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
[23] And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. [24] For John was not yet cast into prison.
[25] Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. [26] And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him. [27] John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. [28] Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. [29] He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. [30] He must increase, but I must decrease. [31] He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. [32] And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. [33] He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. [34] For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. [35] The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. [36] He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
The Scriptures make it clear Jesus did not baptize, but His disciples did.
John 4:1-2 (KJV)
When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, [2] (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
Note that Jesus did not glorify himself but others— chiefly His Father who He said repeated had all Power was not of Himself, but His Father.
Jesus in a similar fashion, is here doing the same— He baptized not, but His disciples did.
It was not the disciples baptism, but the power of God.
Its not Jesus, a man in flesh, but God in the flesh who did the wonderous works.
Just as it was not power in Christ living as man, but Christ dead, the lamb of God slain for sins of the world.
This next Scripture is just explaining where Jesus tarried, but note that it is the very place which has a direct holy ordinance of baptism, where Jesus dwelt.
John 10:40 (KJV)
And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.
The next Scripture is when Jesus reminds His disciples of the quote by John signifying the coming of the Holy Ghost to them.
Acts 1:5 (KJV)
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
This Scripture is often used to deny water baptism, but again it's only showing the difference that God, the Holy Ghost, is the true power of baptism which when water baptized in obedience and in faith, will bring one the promise of salvation.
Acts 1:4-9 (KJV)
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. [5] For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. [6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? [7] And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. [8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. [9] And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
Note that Jesus' disciples baptized with Jesus when he was alive. Now that Jesus has died, is risen from the dead, and will go return to his Father in heaven, his disciples are to tarry until they received the promise of Holy Ghost and will be anointed with power.
And it's after this you will see the disciples continued to baptize with that anointed power from God.
In perfect harmony with this, Peter, the apostle and a disciple of Christ with the twelve in Jerusalem, after receiving the promise of Holy Ghost commanded those to repent and be baptized.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Note that baptism is for repentance (as John's type of baptism in water) for the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost (baptism by the Holy Spirit) through calling on the NAME— the authority —by the Power of JESUS the Christ—who takes away all sin.
Jesus name in the Hebrew Yehoshua means "the Salvation of YHWH."
Acts 4:12 (KJV)
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
The next Scripture states what those hearing Peter did.
Acts 2:41 (KJV)
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Note that those who were baptized were added unto them —into the Church. Only those who were baptized were in the Church, the body of believers in Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:27 (KJV)
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
In the next Scripture we see that after the disciples preach the Word, the Gospel (the good news) of Christ, they that believed then submitted to be baptized.
Acts 8:12-13 (KJV)
But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. [13] Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
It's clear that Faith comes with belief. Belief comes from reading or hearing the Word of God, the gospel, and then belief will cause the believer to want to be baptized.
No one has to be baptized if they don't want to—everyone has a choice, and so called freewill— but realize this shows a lack of understanding on your part and an obvious lack of faith in what is clearly spelled out in the Bible.
You then do not disagree with me, but with the Word of God, you shall judge yourself, and the Word will judge, I judge not (nor am I worthy).
Here is an example of proof that it's not man's act of baptism, but God's, it's not the water only, but the water in union with the blood and the Spirit of Almighty God.
Acts 8:16 (KJV)
(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
The next use of baptism is the story of the disciple and apostle Philip who baptizes an Ethiopian man.
Acts 8:29-40 (KJV)
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. [30] And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? [31] And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. [32] The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: [33] In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. [34] And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? [35] Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. [36] And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? [37] And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. [38] And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. [39] And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. [40] But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
The Ethiopian eunuch desired to know the truth of the Scriptures, and when he read them, and further taught by Philip about Jesus, the eunuch then believed and sought to be baptized.
Notice what the man asked and Philip says, And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? [37] And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Philip does not say 'Sure! Lets get you baptized!'
No, he said specifically says:
"If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest."
Saul in this next scripture is baptized. Saul became Paul the apostle, and a chosen vessel of Christ.
Acts 9:18 (KJV)
And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
Throughout the Gospels and Church history, letters, baptism is repeated again and again as a means to enter into the body of Christ —the Church.
The next Scripture illustrates that God works and manifests His Spirit, or baptism, in no particular or set pattern for each person entering into the body of Christ has a diferent unique experience with God.
Note what happens after Peter is finished speaking and preaching about Christ.
Acts 10:34-48 (KJV)
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: [35] But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. [36] The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) [37] That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; [38] How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. [39] And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: [40] Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; [41] Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. [42] And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. [43] To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
[44] While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. [45] And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. [46] For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, [47] Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? [48] And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
While Peter was speaking, the Holy Ghost fell on these gentiles who believed. After this amazing manifestation of the Spirit happens, Peter commands those who this happened, to be baptized in name of the Lord.
This clearly refers to water baptism!
There are many today who call themselves Christians, who were never got "wet" in the water, they were never baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, yet here both conditions were understood by Christ's disciples (led under the Holy Ghost) that this water baptism had to be performed.
Peter also understood that the Gift of Holy Ghost was given through belief on the Lord Jesus Christ and This also is a baptism, the BAPTISM which can take place during the process of water baptism as well.
Acts 11:1-18 (KJV)
And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. [2] And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, [3] Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. [4] But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, [5] I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: [6] Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. [7] And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. [8] But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. [9] But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. [10] And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. [11] And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. [12] And the spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: [13] And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; [14] Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. [15] And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. [16] Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. [17] Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? [18] When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
It is our faith or belief that pleases God and through this our actions of obedience and repentance and submitting to baptism.
This next Scripture is also very telling.
Acts 16:15 (KJV)
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
Baptism cleanses or washes us or prepares us for entrance to the Kingdom of God, into the body of Christ, to be able to appear before God, judging us faithful before God.
In this next Scripture we see that Paul and Silas while in the prison still converted and baptized.
Acts 16:33 (KJV)
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
Note what happened here.
Acts 16:25-34 (KJV)
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. [26] And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. [27] And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. [28] But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. [29] Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, [30] And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? [31] And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. [32] And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. [33] And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. [34] And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
Paul and Silas preach the gospel and convert the jail men, who now in the fear of God believe. They wash both Paul and Silas' "stripes" —their wounds resulting as they were beaten.
Paul and Silas wash away the stripes of the prison waders, just as Jesus' Blood washes away our stripes, our sins, in baptism— the blood of the lamb also washes away the sins.
Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah and His sacrifice:
Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
This next Scripture shows belief comes before baptism.
Acts 18:8 (KJV)
And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
This Scripture shows the difference between John's and Jesus' baptism.
Acts 19:3-5 (KJV)
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. [4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. [5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
The Important Baptism is the one made in the name of the Lord, Jesus, YHWH's salvation—the name of the Holy Ghost
1st Corinthians 6:11 (KJV)
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Acts 19:1-7 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, [2] He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. [3] And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. [4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. [5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. [7] And all the men were about twelve.
Note that in these Scriptures it shows a physical and Spiritual manifestation, given as a GIFT by God.
One who is baptized and doesn't speak in tongues, is not damned because he or she did not show the same manifestation. This is a Pentecostal myth and unscriptural.
Were it not for the Holy Ghost, none can believe or call Jesus the Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:11 (KJV)
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (KJV)
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. [11] For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. [12] Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
The Holy Ghost as manifested in this physical outward sign is purely a Spiritual Gift given and distributed by God.
The following Scripture shows what Saul was told by Ananias, servant of the Lord after Saul received his eye site back (after blinded by the Lord in Damascus).
Acts 22:16 (KJV)
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Note the urgency "Why tarriest thou?" (why do you delay this) then HE commands or exhorts Saul arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
This is not just a ceremonial act done to entering into "a church".
It is a requirement to be one in Christ, the true Church.
Do you understand that when one is baptized, he or she is baptized into Christ and His Death (likewise arisen to life)?
Romans 6:1-14 (KJV)
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? [2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? [3] Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. [5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: [6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. [7] For he that is dead is freed from sin. [8] Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: [9] Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. [10] For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. [11] Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. [12] Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. [13] Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. [14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
If one is baptized and willfully sins and doesn't repent from sinning yet keeps sinning he is a liar and rejects Christ and is judged by his or her own actions.
Hebrews 10:9-31 (KJV)
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. [10] By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [11] And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: [12] But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; [13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. [14] For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. [15] Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, [16] This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; [17] And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. [18] Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
[19] Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, [20] By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; [21] And having an high priest over the house of God; [22] Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) [24] And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. [26] For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [27] But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. [28] He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: [29] Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? [30] For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. [31] It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
This next scripture about baptism is speaking of the carnal divisions in the churches early on.
today we have divisions of denominational churches, because they simply rely on their own doctrines and not the Word of God.
1st Corinthians 1:13-16 (KJV)
Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? [14] I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; [15] Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. [16] And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
This also a perfect example refuting those who use baptism to identify with one's personal religous sect.
Today we have Catholic, Pentecostals and Baptists, Protestants, Presbyterian, Episcopalians, Methodists ;each denomination or splinter sect like Seven Day Adventists and the non-christian Morman or Jehovah Witness sects; each with its own theology and forms of baptism, not following the pure Word of God.
In this next Scripture Paul is speaking about baptism and repeatedly mentions the Spiritual fruits of God as he warns those who are baptized and have received God's grace not to continue in sin.
1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (KJV)
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; [2] And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; [3] And did all eat the same spiritual meat; [4] And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. [5] But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. [6] Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. [7] Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. [8] Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. [9] Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. [10] Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. [11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. [12] Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. [13] There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
This next Scripture shows us that we are all Baptized by one Spirit in the same one body of Christ, therefore there is no division.
1st Corinthians 12:13 (KJV)
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
The last Scripture, revealing the awesome mystery and power of God, that as many have been baptized into Christ have put on, or become in the Body of Christ.
Galatians 3:27 (KJV)
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Look at the full context of this Scripture.
Galatians 3:6-29 (KJV)
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
[7] Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. [8] And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. [9] So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. [10] For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. [11] But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. [12] And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. [13] Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: [14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. [15] Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. [16] Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. [17] And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. [18] For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. [19] Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. [20] Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. [21] Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. [22] But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
[23] But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. [26] For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
This Scripture is saying many things, but as it concerns baptism, Paul is saying that as many believed and were baptized into Jesus the Christ, have put on or become a part of Christ —that Seed —according to Holy Promise given to Abraham and His seed, justified by their faith in God.
There are many other important Scriptures we could cover on the topic of baptism, but for now the basic point has been communicated.
I hope you will strongly consider what has been stated, listen to the Bible, the Word of GOD speak to you, and do what it says and if you feel pricked to your heart, If thou believest with all thine heart that Jesus is the Christ and Son of God who came to take away sin of the world then why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
I pray that you have been blessed, and that anyone reading this study will be blessed by YHWH as I have been in writing it.
May YHWH show you all truth in His Word of Truth and keep you and bring to a greater knowledge of Jesus the Christ.
In the beloved name of Jesus our Lord and Savior, I make this prayer.
Have you repented of your sins?
Have you been “washed in the blood of the Lamb?”
Do you know Jesus?
