Was Jesus a great teacher or was He a Prophet or was He just a man of great wisdom? To understand who Jesus is, one first needs to read the Holy Bible.
Mark 8:27-29 (KJV)
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? [28] And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. [29] And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?...
Now you'll look at where Jesus first arrives in the New Testament and begin to see how this testimony is directly related to that which was prophesied in the Old Testament books.
The Holy Bible Says that Jesus was born of a virgin named Mary by the Power of God through the Holy Ghost.
Luke 1:26-38 (KJV)
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, [27] To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. [28] And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. [29] And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. [30] And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. [31] And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. [32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [33] And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. [34] Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? [35] And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. [36] And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. [37] For with God nothing shall be impossible. [38] And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
The above Scripture is only one of the several Gospel accounts, but notice that this child JESUS was according the Scriptures conceived by the Holy Ghost, the Power of GOD, and “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [33] And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
First, one should notice that all of this is related to earlier prophecies in books of the Old Testament concerning Jacob or Israel. The mention of the kingdom of David of who JESUS' lineage is from the royal descendents of the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Note the Holy Scripture above stated that " a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David." To understand the significance of this, one needs to first understand the Hebrew Law of God, to know that the father or male of the family usually held the title or inheritance of the name for the family in Israel's customs. However, in the Old Covenant Law an Israelite woman would retain her tribal inheritance and usually married into the same tribes (like the tribe of Judah).
Mary, the virgin and mother of Jesus, was of the tribe of Judah and the house of Judah (as was her husband Joseph, but remember GOD was the FATHER). That meant that the son of Mary was born of the tribal inheritance of the house of David and her husband Joseph was also heir to the royal lineage of King David, whom God found great favor with and who ruled over the house of all 12 tribes of Israel.
For anyone to truly understand this significance of the house of David, one must read the Holy Bible and understand who Israel was, where the children of Israel came from, and what prophecies there were concerning Israel.
Luke 24:44 (KJV)
And he [JESUS] said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
To truly know Jesus we have to take the entire Holy Bible, and the whole Holy Bible or All Holy Scriptures.
Particularly, one must be a student of the Old Testament before one can truly understand the significance of the New Testament writings.
Reading only the New Testament— as many Church missionaries pass out— will actually defeat their purpose, for the whole Word of God must be taken in its entirety to make the full picture.
Understanding who Israel is and the stories regarding Israel contained in the Hebrew Old Testament, is very important to understanding who Jesus Is, and why He is so important to God's plan of Salvation.
