The soul that sinneth, it shall die.
God, YHWH, speaking through his prophet Ezekiel gives us a glimpse of how our God’s judgment works and what he expects of man while he lives before he dies.
Read this enlightening prophetic scripture.
Ezekiel 18:4-32
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD. 10 ¶ If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things, 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. 14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, 15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, 16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment, 17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity. 19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21 ¶ But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? 24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. 25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? 30 ¶ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
YHWH, God, is speaking of souls, which men clearly possess, and that all souls belong to God; He is man’s Creator. God states that the soul that sinnith or commits a transgression or transgressions (sins) against God-- that soul shall not live. The man who lives a life of sin will surely die. But the death God is speaking about is not only earthly, but that of the eternal, eternal death; and while it is not mentioned here, this refers to Hell fire and damnation.
However, the man who lives a righteous life according to the measure of God’s righteousness that soul shall live and not die. We know all men die at some point in time, so the scriptures are referring to life after death. While it’s not mentioned here, this is the salvation from the wrath of God and everlasting life -- a life in eternal heaven.
There is hope mentioned in the scriptures for the man who sins, for if he or she turns away from his or her sins and begin to live a righteous life according to measure of God's righteousness, that soul shall live and not die. If a man or woman who lives a life of sin and will repent of their sins to God and repent in turning away from their past sinful nature and begin do what is righteous, that soul of that man or woman has the reward of life and hope of salvation from the wrath of God.
This Scripture where God spoke through his prophet Ezekiel was spoken for Israel’s benefit and as warning to the house of Israel (or the twelve tribes of Israel). This was spoken and written down at time of the period covering the Old Covenant God made with Israel.
The Old Covenant has been replaced by the New Covenant which God made with Israel.
The Prophet Jeremiah, whom God spoke through, declared the promise of a New Covenant.
Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith YHWH, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith YHWH: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith YHWH, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know YHWH: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith YHWH: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. 35 ¶ Thus saith YHWH, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; YHWH of hosts is his name: 36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith YHWH, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37 Thus saith YHWH; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith YHWH.
In the new covenant made with Israel, both the house of Judah (2 tribes) and house of Israel (10 tribes) God says he will put in Israelites, in their inner parts, YHWHs Law; the law shall be written in their heart, YHWH shall be their God and they shall be His people.
Furthermore, YHWH states He will forgive the iniquity (the sins) of Israel and remember their sin no more (they shall be forgiven). When this happens, they shall all from youngest to the oldest of Israel know their God, know YHWH in truth.
Additionally, we see God tells us that that this promise will be to the nation of Israel (12 tribes) as long as the moon and sun and stars exist! And unless man can number the all the heavens, the stars and foundation of the earth then God will cast off the seed of Israel for all the sin and iniquity they have done.
Man surely cannot measure the heavens, so Israel (as twelve tribes) not only exists today, but is ensured the salvation that God stated when spoken through his prophet.
We know that a New Covenant was indeed made with the House of Israel.
Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Mark 14:24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Luke 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Who declared the New Testament (New Covenant) in these scriptures above?
It was JESUS the Christ who physically declared the New Covenant in his person and in his blood when he died (was crucified) on the tree (the cross) for the sins (iniquity) of Israel (the 12 tribes) and all men and women (all other who would join or enter into that New Covenant).
Jesus, or Emmanuel God with us, was born of the Holy Ghost, born to take away the sins of his people Israel.
Matthew 1:18-25 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
Jesus is the promised Savior of Israel; the Lamb of God (sacrificial Lamb) who takes away the sins of the world (Israel and others who join the new covenant).
John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
So how does one join themselves to the new covenant?
One must join themselves to Jesus the Christ!
What did Jesus say is way to the Salvation of God’s forgiveness?
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
First he told all to repent of their sins (iniquity) against God.
Later Jesus taught more.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
One must believe in Jesus and his message (one must have Faith in Jesus) and one also must be baptized by God through baptism (the blood of the new covenant --the blood {sacrifice on the cross} of Jesus the Christ).
Through our faith in Jesus we are all children of God.
Galatians 3:26-28 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:3-11 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore He or she that believes in Jesus and his testimony and is baptized by God through baptism (the blood of Jesus or blood of the lamb) our souls are washed clean of sin (or our sins are forgiven by God’s grace through Jesus the Christ). When we are submerged in baptism we die like as died Jesus our savior on the cross. When arisen out the water of baptism, we are risen with Jesus as Jesus was risen from the dead by God. Like Jesus who is arisen alive forever more so we too will live forever more in heavens with God as the children of God (as the Israel of God).
This the Salvation of God in the New Testament, the New Covenant God made with children of Israel and all who would join to it-- Forgiveness of sin and Life everlasting with God!
