Why Jesus had to come and die
It has been said by some Christians that Jesus did not have to do what he did, meaning die on the cross, God could have done it some other way, even citing the scripture where Jesus said his disciples, “Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?”
Jesus also asked in the same breath, “But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”
This is a brief study designed to show that Jesus had to die, and Lord willing, I will show going through God’s Word, why he had to die.
We begin after the tragic temptation and sin of Adam and Eve.
God had created man perfect and all his creation perfect, and man was in perfect harmony with God in his paradise for a while, but after the devil, posing as a serpent, tempted and destroyed that harmony, God set about a plan to reclaim man and his creation, not only for the fact that God loved man, but the fact that man was created for God’s glory.
While devil is subtle, he is not God, who has more wisdom and has numerous of steps ahead of Satan, who is merely a prideful angelic being.
YHWH the God of creation had the Plan fully completed in a few milliseconds of time, as he decreed his punishment on the man, woman, and the serpent.
Genesis 3:14-15
¶ And YHWH God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Though God’s Plan was complete in God’s mind, the implementation of that Plan would take a longer period of time. Adam and Eve, now were covered by their sin and the curse of sin imputed upon them by God for their breaking of God’s law. They would leave paradise and venture into a cold, hard, world, their children would grow up in, from this point forward.
In the next scripture a vast amount of time had passed, the seed of Adam had narrowly escaped destruction were it not for the grace of God on a man named Noah, and now many, many moons later God was about to start the implementation of his Plan.
We begin with the man Abram, who YHWH God reveals his presence to and calls Abram out of his land.
Genesis 12:1-3
¶ Now YHWH had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
In this scripture we see God's promises to Abram, particularly the promise of “and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
The Holy Bible says Abram acted on God’s words and believed YHWH.
Later, we learn of more promises to Abram.
Genesis 13:14-16
¶ And YHWH said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. 16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
Abram is promised a great space of land, a promised land, forever, but more importantly God promised Abram to make his children and children’s children, and their children, his seed, as many as, and as numerous as “the dust of the earth.”
Genesis 15:1-6
¶ After these things the word of YHWH came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 2 ¶ And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of YHWH came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in YHWH; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
YHWH promises Abram a child of his own family’s loins and more amazing that his seed shall be as the stars of heaven. The Holy Bible records that Abram believed YHWH and YHWH counted Abram’s faith as righteousness. Abram was a righteous man.
Next, we skip ahead to when YHWH appears to Abram and makes with him an everlasting covenant.
Genesis 15:7-17
¶ And he said unto him, I am YHWH that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. 12 ¶ And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 17 ¶ And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
What happened here? Well, YHWH instructed Abram to set up a covenant using the dead carcasses of animals, with which Abram would have understood that he was supposed to walk between the cut in half animals as part of his side of the covenant, or agreement pact with God. But a covenant, or pact, involved both parties to keep their end of the covenant, or else the one walking between the animals who failed to meet the terms of the agreement must die the same fate as those animal carcasses. So, YHWH was planning to walk through the animals as well.
YHWH did that, but Abram had fallen into a deep sleep after he prepared the covenant animals, therefore only YHWH physically walked through, between the carcases, making a covenant with Abram with himself, against his own self, a covenant he would have to die if the agreed to terms were not kept perfectly. The burning torch which Abram witnessed after he had awoken, had made Abram impossible to enter his side of the pact.
The Holy Bible records that YHWH made this covenant with Abram.
Genesis 15:18-21
In the same day YHWH made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
Next, we will look at where God changes Abram’s name to Abraham, and makes another covenant with Abraham.
Genesis 17:1-11
¶ And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, YHWH appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 ¶ As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 ¶ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
God makes a covenant of circumcision with Abraham and his seed after him.
Next, we skip head several hundred years in time to where Abrahams’ seed, the children of Israel, now twelve tribes of people, are about agree to YHWH’s covenant made with them.
YHWH, after saving the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage, gave Israel a law of the ten commandments and his statues under the law.
Exodus 24:3-4
And Moses came and told the people all the words of YHWH, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which YHWH hath said will we do. 4 And Moses wrote all the words of YHWH, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.
The people of Israel agreed to the law and many statutes of God at Mt Sinia.
Next, we skip ahead to about a thousand years of time that has passed. God's covenant with Israel and his promises to Abraham, have been confirmed in the way that God had given Israel, Abraham’s seeds, the land of Cannan, and Israel had taken the land with YHWH’s help according his word. Israel was now a blessed vast multitude of peoples who live united as twelve tribes, under the kingship of king David and his son Solomon. It is here we begin to see not only the glory years of the twelve tribes of Israel, but begin to witness the fall of Israel; Israel’s fall from grace has begun.
Read the fall from grace of Solomon.
1st Kings 11:1-11
¶ But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 2 Of the nations concerning which YHWH said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with YHWH his God, as was the heart of David his father. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of YHWH, and went not fully after YHWH, as did David his father. 7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. 8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. 9 ¶ And YHWH was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from YHWH God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, 10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which YHWH commanded. 11 Wherefore YHWH said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
The situation was starting to unravel, as we will see in following scriptures that God is about divide Israel, and one day cast away from off the promised land, the people of Israel for their many, many, sins.
1st Kings 12:1-28
¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) 3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: 9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? 10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins. 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him; 14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from YHWH, that he might perform his saying, which YHWH spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 16 ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. 17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day. 20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only. 21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, 24 Thus saith YHWH, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of YHWH, and returned to depart, according to the word of YHWH. 25 ¶ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of YHWH at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
God divided what was prior twelve united tribes, into two divided groups. The first group was the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, which formed the southern house of Judah, also known in the Holy Bible as the house of the Jews. The second group was the northern house of Israel, Israelites of ten of the twelve tribes of Israel.
From this point in history of Israel, the twelve tribes exist as two divided houses, Judah and Israel.
Next, we will read about the first ten tribed kingdom of Israel and its fall, for its people's many sins and great rebellion to YHWH and his law.
2nd Kings 17:1-18
¶ In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years. 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him. 3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents. 4 And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. 7 ¶ For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against YHWH their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, 8 And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom YHWH cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. 9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against YHWH their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. 10 And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree: 11 And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom YHWH carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke YHWH to anger: 12 For they served idols, whereof YHWH had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. 13 Yet YHWH testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. 14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in YHWH their God. 15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom YHWH had charged them, that they should not do like them. 16 And they left all the commandments of YHWH their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of YHWH, to provoke him to anger. 18 Therefore YHWH was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
Only the house of Judah, the Jews was left, the ten tribes were removed off the promised land to Assyria, in about 722 B.C., never to return to the land again. Though Israel sinned and was taken away, Judah, the Jews, did not learn from their Israelite brethren’s fall and sins, for Judah would in time commit worse sins than Israel, and about 137 years later YHWH used the Babylonians to take away Judah from the land in about 585 B.C..
2nd Chronicles 36:15-21
And YHWH God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of YHWH arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand. 18 And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of YHWH, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. 19 And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 21 To fulfil the word of YHWH by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
The Plan seemed to be falling apart, all of Israel had largely forsaken God and now was removed off the land promised to Abraham and his seed. This required an intervention by God. Without an intervention by God Israel and Abram's promises seemed lost, but during disaster God was about to bring hope.
Daniel 9:24-26
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
God was going to raise up a Messiah, a Savior for Israel to save them of their sins and restore the order and harmony of peace for the Israelite peoples back to God. This messiah would come for the twelve tribes of Israel and have to be “cut off,” or die, for the sins of his people to “make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness.”
God through his holy and faithful prophets would speak to the troubled Israelite nation about this messiah.
Isaiah 53:1-12
¶ Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of YHWH revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and YHWH hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 ¶ Yet it pleased YHWH to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of YHWH shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
The prophets foretold of God’s plans for Israel, as well, in a future new covenant to be made with the children of Israel.
Jeremaih 31:31-37
Behold, the days come, saith YHWH, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith YHWH: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith YHWH, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know YHWH: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith YHWH: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. 35 ¶ Thus saith YHWH, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; YHWH of hosts is his name: 36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith YHWH, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37 Thus saith YHWH; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith YHWH.
Now, having looked at everything written so far in this study of the Old Testament scriptures, you will see what the New Testament writer of Hebrews understood about this plan of God.
Hebrews 9:16-23
For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. 23 ¶ It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
“Where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.” This meant that the covenant maker had to cut, or shed blood, had to die, for the covenant to be in power. As we already studied YHWH made an everlasting covenant with Abram, and a covenant which Abram was not directly or physically held to die for, but YHWH was.
When the stipulated promise and plan was failing, or had fallen apart, God had to make good on his promise to Abram. But how can an ever-existing God die?
How can God, a Spirit, die?
He was about to do just that, by sending apart of Him, His very Holy Spirit to earth as his prophets had foretold. We learn about this in the New Testament scriptures.
Matthew 1:18-23
¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Seven hundred or more years following the first fall of Israel, the Spirit, YHWH, sent his Holy Spirit to visit and impregnate a virgin daughter of Judah, the Jewish tribe of the line of king David, to bear a Son of YHWH to “save his people from their sins.” The prophesy had come to full and now a virgin had conceived with a Son, and “God with us.”
God was with us, born in human flesh.
The New Testament gospel of Luke mentions this Son of God’s future reign.
Luke 1:30-35
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
His reign will be over all twelve tribes of Jacob/Israel, who are currently divided and scattered about the earth, in division, as lost sheep without a shepherd, or a savior. This Son of God’s kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, with “no end.”
When Jesus is eight days old, he is circumcised according to YHWH’s Covenant made with Abraham, later his parents bring him to Jerusalem to be presented to YHWH, notice what the man of God has to say about Jesus.
Luke 2:25-32
¶ And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
Jesus was born under the tribe of Judah, and born under the written law of YHWH, and would live for the next 33 years of his life in obedience to the law and customs of Israel laid down by YHWH.
When Jesus is 30 years old, he visits a lost daughter of Israel, a Samaritan woman, at the well of Jacob, her forefather’s well. Notice who Jesus says he is sent to minister to.
John 4:6-26
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Jesus was sent first to the Jews, the house of Judah, of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Levi and others who of a small minority, of the ten lost tribes of Israel, who were living scattered about at the time in the land, who were the visible remnant of the twelve tribes of Israel. Judah remained, whereas the majority of Israel, the ten other tribes, were 700 years long scattered into the nations of the Gentiles.
Jesus said exactly who he came first for.
Matthew 10:5-8
¶ These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
Matthew 15:24
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
“Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Jesus' mission for first most was to the children of Israel who were under the law of YHWH, under the Covenant of YHWH who were expecting the arrival of the prophesied messiah.
Jesus, the Messiah, had come, his ministry to Israel and the peoples of land of Israel had taken place; as Jesus went around teaching and performing amazing healings and wonders before the people, he also professed his own coming death; the Plan of YHWH to make good for his promise to Abram was coming to fulfilment.
Before Jesus was ready to give his life as an offering for the sins of Israel and all of mankind, Jesus declared the New Covenant which YHWH made with Israel proclaimed through his prophet Jeremiah.
Mattew 26:26-29 ¶ And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
With the New Covenant declared by the Son of YHWH, now all that was needed was his death, an offering, a holy offering for sin to save Israel and make good on YHWH’s covenant with Abram.
Mark 15:25-26
And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
The New Covenant YHWH made with Israel had been ratified, in his own Spirit’s blood, now shed in the flesh of his Son Jesus who died for the sin of all the world.
John 1:29
¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
The Plan for the all the world can best be witnessed in YHWH’s love for not only Israel, but anyone who would join themselves to the New Covenant to love YHWH.
Isaiah 56:1-8
¶ Thus saith YHWH, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 3 ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to YHWH, speak, saying, YHWH hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 4 For thus saith YHWH unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to YHWH, to serve him, and to love the name of YHWH, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. 8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
Anyone who joined to this New Covenant proclaimed by Jesus and, would in doing so, believe in Jesus, would receive acceptance and ultimately inheritance with Israel, as God’s own people.
John 3:15-18
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Ephesians 2:11-22
¶ Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 ¶ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
Now the Gentiles receive the same salvation and inheritance in their faith in Jesus, the Son of God who died for the sins of Israel and all the world.
John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture must be fulfilled, says one last set of words, “It is finished.” The Plan of God, the Plan YHWH had since the garden of Eden, payment for the sin of all of mankind, was finished and both the Old Covenant and New Covenant had been ratified with the death of Jesus, his most holy blood shed on the cross.
Today that blood sacrifice for the sin of mankind, that new Covenant which YHWH made is only entered into by your faith in Jesus Christ, YHWH’s salvation, his Son.
Romans 1:16-17
¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Romans 10:8-18
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 ¶ For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
That, my friends, is why God, Jesus, had come, and had to die on the cross.
This brings us to the last full consummation of God, YHWH’s plan not only to save man from sin, but have a pure, holy, perfected, people who God first created for his glory.
Revelation 21:1-7
¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
This is why God had no other option in his hands, once he made a promise, he keeps his promises for YHWH is a God, a Spirit of Truth, and God of Righteousness, and Holiness, and Purity.
Our God is a promise keeper.
Will not you Glorify Him and Praise Him for His amazing wisdom, power, and love, and His sacrifice for us, His people ISRAEL, for everyone "Jew first" or "Greek" who has entered into YHWH’s pact, His covenant, becomes a son or daughter of Israel, one in the inheritance of the Israel of God. And God will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Thank you YHWH!
Thank you JESUS!
All praise, honor, and glory is yours, for now, and forever!
Do you know Jesus?
He died for your sins?
Are you covered by the blood of the Lamb of God slain for the sins of the world?
